Assessments

Diagnostic assessments are available for a range of conditions

Autism Spectrum Disorder

We are able to provide dual Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnostic assessments. The assessment will involve gathering information from you about your child, from your child’s kindergarten, school or child care educators and observing your child in a play-based social session.  Feedback will generally be provided at the session. However, sometimes further information may need to be gathered before a conclusion can be reached. A written report is then prepared explaining the assessment process, diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations. A dual assessment is carried out by a Psychologist and Speech Pathologist.

Cognitive Assessment

Cognitive assessments measure an individual’s performance in the areas of verbal comprehension, reasoning, visual spatial ability, memory and processing speed. Information about your child’s IQ score can also be obtained. This assessment can help you to understand your child’s strengths and challenges, which can provide valuable assistance to children who may be struggling at school. They can also be used to diagnose intellectual disability.

Psychoeducational Assessment

Psychoeducational assessments can be useful for understanding your child’s abilities in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics. This assessment involves direct testing of your child’s academic abilities, and gathering information about your child’s functioning from you, and your child’s teacher. This assessment includes a cognitive assessment (described above). This assessment can be used to identify Specific Learning Disorders.

ADHD

ADHD diagnostic assessments involve gathering information from caregivers and school staff familiar with your child, via questionnaires and interviews. Your child will attend an assessment session with a psychologist, during which they will be interviewed and observed. Our psychologists also take this opportunity to conduct a psychoeducational assessment (described above). This enables the psychologist to see your child completing tasks that require focus and sustained attention, but it also allows them to determine whether any learning difficulties may contribute to your child’s presentation. At the end of this assessment, you will have an answer to the question of ADHD and a good understanding of your child’s learning profile.
