Psychology
Psychologists are experts in mental health, having undertaken extensive training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a range of psychological conditions.
Psychologists are able to assist children and adolescents with a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, anger, defiance, self-esteem, lack of confidence, grief, social difficulties, sleep issues, and other mental health concerns.
Depending on the particular issue to be addressed, a range of therapeutic modalities may be drawn upon. When working with children and adolescents, therapy is tailored to the individual’s developmental level and often involves games and other activities, such as drawing and completing worksheets. Sometimes, videos and other online resources are utilised to support the learning of a new concept. An important part of the treatment process is providing children and families with ‘psychoeducation’ regarding their difficulties, so that they can better understand and cope with the problem. It is vital that parents and caregivers participate in the therapeutic process, as they are the ones who can support the implementation of strategies outside of the therapy setting.
A typical appointment might involve the child, parent/s, and psychologist speaking together at the beginning of the session, before the child and psychologist complete an activity or discuss a particular topic. If the parent leaves the room for this part of the appointment, they will rejoin at the end to discuss the session and any homework/goals that have been set. Of course, therapy sessions differ depending on the particular client’s needs. Most importantly, it is the psychologist’s job to ensure that the child feels safe and comfortable so that they are able to get the most out of an appointment.
